Nonuniform Distribution of Crystalline Phases and Grain Sizes in the Surface Layers of WC Ceramics Produced by Spark Plasma Sintering

The research results conducted on binderless tungsten carbide (WC) ceramics obtained by spark plasma sintering (SPS) of WC powders with different average particle sizes (95, 800, 3000 nm) are presented. Nonuniform distribution crystalline phases and microstructure the was studied using layer-by-layer X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Surface layers WC-based characterized nonuniform W2C phase grain sizes, including appearance abnormally large grains. Thickness layer at least 50 μm. effect under study is associated an intense carbon diffusion from graphite foil. On one hand, this contributed to a decrease in intensity formation, which transformed into α-WC due carbon. other it caused abnormal growth where diffused. value depth (50 μm) exceeds values known literature (up 1 μm case volume even temperature 2370 °C exposure time ~60 h). use boron nitride (BN) as protective coating mold parts did not prevent formation ceramic surface.
